The first known reference to "the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming" was an interview with Honoree Ashby "Brud" Harper in 1988 when he announced his plan to swim Catalina to complete the challenge. In the mid 1990s the organizers of the Manhattan swim used the term as part of their marketing efforts. Other Triple Crowns are gaining popularity including: Australian, Californian, Irish and Original (also call UK 3 Channel Challenge).
